Triathlon Gear for Beginners: What You Actually Need
Triathlon has a reputation as an expensive sport, but your first race needs surprisingly little. A sprint triathlon (roughly 750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run) can be done with gear most people already own plus a few essentials. Here is what to buy first and what can wait.

Must-haves for race one
These are the things you can't race without, or will really regret skipping.
- Goggles you've swum in β see our open-water goggles guide
- A roadworthy bike and an approved helmet β any bike in good working order is fine for your first race
- Running shoes you've trained in
- Something to swim, bike and run in β a tri suit is easiest, but swimwear plus a top works
- Race number belt (cheap, and saves pinning numbers)
Buy next: when water temperature says so
Many open-water races use or require wetsuits when the water is cold; your event's rules will say when they are compulsory, allowed or banned. If you're racing in cool water, a triathlon-specific wetsuit is the single biggest comfort and speed upgrade β our wetsuit guide has a best and a budget option. Renting is a sensible choice for your first season.
Worth it once you're hooked
A tri suit saves changing time and chafes less than improvised kit. A multisport watch makes pacing and training structure much easier. Elastic laces and a transition bag make race morning calmer.
What can wait
Aero helmets, deep wheels, a time-trial bike and power meters make you faster at the margins, but they matter far less than consistent swim, bike and run training. Spend on fit and comfort first. If you want to train indoors over winter, a smart trainer is usually a better investment than faster wheels.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a road bike for my first triathlon?
No. Any bike in safe working order is usually allowed. Check your race rules for helmet and bike requirements.
Do I need a wetsuit for a sprint triathlon?
Only if the water is cold enough that your race requires or allows one. Pool-swim sprints don't use wetsuits at all.
